Berlin’s Unity Monument given the go ahead

With the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall approaching, Germany’s minister for culture announced that plans for Berlin’s Einheitdenkmal can start right away, with the monument expected to be completed by 2017.

Federal Minister for Culture Monika Grütters gave the green light on Wednesday to begin construction for Berlin’s Unity Monument.

The monument will be built as a tribute to the civil movement that moved East German politicians back in November 1989, giving citizens the freedom to cross into West Germany. East and West Germany were politically reunified, less than twelve months later.

“All legal issues … have been resolved,” Grütters said, “so the unique and technically demanding monument can now be realized.”

The original plans for the Berlin monument were confirmed in 2007, but were pushed back due to several difficulties.

Grütters also showed her delight of being able to display the designs of the Monument literally days before the 25th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin wall, making it unveiling almost ‘poetic’.
