Bill Gates praises German investments

The two met on Tuesday to discuss matters relating to the importance of investing in health care in developing nations.

During this meeting the Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates praised Merkel for her efforts towards the battle against Ebola. He also complimented her for the investments in health programs in developing countries worldwide.

‘The Ebola epidemic should be a wake-up call to industrialized nations’, Gates said following his meeting with Merkel, before proceeding to add that “immediate help is just as necessary as long-term research into neglected infectious diseases and developing health systems in developing countries.”

Merkel also chose to comment after their meeting, stating that the recent outbreak of Ebola in West Africa was proof of how a “health crisis can almost overnight reach to a global extent.”

Germany will be hosting a conference dedicated to supporters of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) in January 2015. Bill and Melinda Gates are the most generous private donors to this cause.  GAVI is already responsible for the immunization of over 440 million children in developing countries.

Bill Gates also met with German Development Minister Gerd Müller. Müller made an announcement claiming that the federal government “plans to increase our support for GAVI by 40 million euros yearly – provided the Bundestag agrees”.
