Burger King terminates contracts in Germany

Burger King has cancelled its contracts with its biggest franchise in Germany – Yi-Ko Holding, after complaints about its poor hygienic standards and working conditions came to light earlier this year.

Yi-Ko holding was responsible for the running of over 10% of Burger King’s 700 restaurants in Germany. The contract ended without prior notice on Tuesday, Burger King announced Wednesday in Munich.

Earlier this year, it’s restaurants were part of an investigative TV documentary, showing poor food safety standards, which eventually led to the contract termination.

Andeas Bork, head of the fast food chain in Germany, spoke to the newspaper “Bild”, stating¬†“After the hygiene scandal in May, there were a lot of improvements at first. But since summer, there have been repeated breaches of the agreements made,”.

Bork went on to say that aside from hygiene problems, Yi-Ko Holding also breached employees’ contracts by avoiding the payments of holiday pay, bonuses and paying sick leave late.

Currently, the future of the restaurants and their employees is unclear.¬†“We will do everything we can to keep as many of the restaurants and protect as many jobs as possible,” Bork said.
