German businesses claim train strikes cost over €500m

Recent train strikes in Germany are said to have had a big impact on businesses. The federation of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) said on Friday that strikes carried out by train driver’s union GDL cost Germany a hefty price of over half a billion Euros.

Continuing the strikes will have harsher repercussions according to DIHK chief Martin Wansleben, claiming that if the strikes we’re to proceed in the lead-up to Christmas then shopping and tourism would suffer.

Rail operator Deutsche Bahn is expected to have seperate discussions with GDL and EVG on Friday. These meetings will take place after three-way negotiations fell through earlier this week.

GDL is seeking an improved pay, shorter working hours as well as  the right to take over representation of additional rail staff from EVG.
